CTC is an industry leader in highway-rail grade crossing safety, including grade crossings interconnected with traffic signal systems. Firm personnel helped develop industry standards and recommended practices for grade crossing design, applications, and safety. As a result of this expertise, CTC team members have conducted more than 2,500 highway-rail grade crossing safety assessments over the last eight years for clients across American, including Class I railroads; short line and regional railroads; commuter railroads; and public road and transit agencies. Our knowledge spans the spectrum of grade crossing safety, from inspections and assessments to active and passive grade crossing warning systems,
Grade Crossing Safety Inspections and Assessments
Based on our experience conducting inspections and implementing preemption programs for railroads, and various state and local agencies, we have found that the most successful approach is to properly plan for and conduct the inspections systematically while working with state and local agencies to make on-site corrections and implement recommendations. This allows for a more efficient means of arriving at the desired end result of improved grade crossing safety. Upon the conclusion of a diagnostic assessment, CTC will analyze the data collected and prepare a detailed comprehensive report of the findings, analysis, and recommendations for each diagnostic team assessment. The firm will also make appropriate and thoughtful recommendations on a number of elements, including:
- Identifying critical safety issues
- State and agency coordination
- Review proposed preemption operations, railroad circuit design and traffic signal interconnection for new and upgraded interconnected crossings
- Traffic engineering concerns
- Railroad signal design
- Streamlined safety processes
- Grade crossing safety training for agency employees, law enforcement, and other relevant personnel; and more.
